BYU has an insane number of RMs. If you are an RM then this post is for you! You just got home from your mission and your off to school. Thank goodness that school is BYU, becuase as a fresh RM college and the world can seem like a scary place, but it would be way worse at other colleges. As a fresh RM and a new BYU student there are a few things you need to remember.
1. You can work your misison sotries into every converstaion. Talk about the weather, the people, the experiences, you had on your mission. Or, talk about how you still wake up at 6:30 and go to bed at 10, how you can't talked to the opposite sex, and how you now have the best study habits in the world! 2. If you spoke another language on your mission, take that language as a class! It will be a breeze and you get to use your language skills so you don't lose them. Also it is very impressive. 3. Stick to the plan you made before you left your mission 4. Ward memebers will not generally volunteer to feed you so you better not get rid of any leftover macoroni. 5. You can keep in contact with your family via phone calls! More than just two times a year! 6. Go home for Christmas 7. Keep yourself busy...get a job! 8. You will probably be asked to give talks or teach lessons on a regular bases, so that much hasn't changed 9. Music and TV are a necessitiy, but you might want to easy back into them slowly 10. There are lots of temples close to campus! Make time to visit! Remember, everyone wants to date the RMs so ask people out, go out and before you know it BYU will seem a lot less scary, however, I make no promises about the rest of the world. Watch for the next instalment of Religiously BYU where we disscuss the recent Christmas devotional!

Just because we as BYU students don't do drugs or drink alcohol doesn't mean we aren't partying all the time! There is always something going on at BYU. Whether it's a game, a dance, a movie or game night, a party by BYUSA, or even just a study session, there is no stopping the endless fun you can have at BYU. Step 1 to the complete party that is BYU is to get a ROC pass! Seriously, there is nothing more fun than standing in the ROC line for 8 hours before the game starts, and nothing more heart pounding than a close game, or getting your face on the Jumbotron. Step 2 keep your ears and eyes peeled for events happening on campus. Go to the WILK and there are tons of people handing out candy and informing you of the fun activities they are hosting. Step 3 your ward will host some wonderful get togethers, and you have to go! Step 4 never turn down inviations to go out! Step 5 host your own game night and bring the party to you. Step 6 Be awesome and everyone will want to hang out with you all the time. Step 7 go to the plays and concerts on campus! They will never be this cheap again. Step 8 If you can't go to the party, bring the party to you. Step 9 center street is always hoppin. And Step 10 Always go to everything you can! Added Bounus: Many of these events offer delcious and FREE food.
BYU is an exciting place and even if you don't want to praticipate, you will soon find yourself out and about, screaming, dancing, and partying along with everyone else, and making your college experience something to remember. Watch for the next instalment of Ain't No Party Like a BYU Party Cuz a BYU Party Don't Stop and learn all about the differnt clubs on campus that need you in them. BYU is famous for bringing filled to the brim with Mormons. Excuse me, Latter Day Saints. And it's true. Understanding Mormon religion is a vital part of surviving BYU. The life we lead and the standards we keep are not as stange as people try to make them sound, but they do factor greatly into our everyday lives here at BYU, starting with the honor code. The honor code is something that we as students have to abide by daily. The honor code has the same standards we are asked to follow as mormons. You will also see many other symbols of our religion around campus. From Professors starting their class with a prayer, to the beatuiful pictures of Christ, to the required religion classes. Somethings you should really know are: when General Confernece is, when and where your FHE goup meets, which wards meet where on campus, who your home and visiting teachers are, who you home/visit teach, since we don't go out on Sundays, you will most likey be invited to a game night, ward prayer, there are so many RM's that you must be willing to listen to mission stories, and lots and lots of temple weddings. BYU was founded on religous principles, and beasue of the devotion we have of maintatining those standards there is a special spirit that resides at BYU. Everyone can feel it whether they are LDS or not. You do not have to be Mormon/LDS to go to BYU, but you will know and understand a lot more about Mormon's and their culture by the time you leave. You are at BYU? Welcome to the meat market. That sounds bad but it's true. Coming to college is not just about getting your degree. The good news is you have at least 4 years to find an eternal companion. The bad news is everyone else is trying to do the same thing. To find success, here are a few helpful tips to remember...
1. Ring check is a real thing! Don't waste your time getting to know a person who is already engaged. 2. You have a ward directory...USE IT!! 3. Study groups are a great way to meet people 4. To get that ring by spring, you have start dating someone before Spring! 5. Have a 6 month plan prepared, so when you do get that date you know what to do next. And remember, it's ok to use the full 4 years to find a spouse. If you need more time you can always switch your major. BYU is about marriage and the college degree, I mean we aren't BYUI... BYU has it's own very specific slang. Knowing the lingo is an essntial part of success at BYU. Swearing is a definite no-no, but we have our substitutes that help get those emotions across. Words like frick, fudge, dang, darn, shoot, crap, and son of a gun are commonly heard on campus...especially during finals week.
Another Provo vocab must have is that Utahan accent. It is very simple and will help you blend in with ease. In Utah people DO NOT say their T's. Mountian is pronounced mounian, Trent is Tren (with a slight uh at the end), or announcement is pronounced announcemen. If you are saying your T's loud and clear you will definitely stand out amoung the crowd. Sarcasm is like BYU students personal gun that they carry around. Be prepared to dish it and to take it, or you will spend your entire semester offened by everything people say. BYU is home to an astounding amount of RM's (and if you don't know what RM means you are in serious trouble). These RM's have served all over the world, and many of them have learned to speak another language. If you don't speak more than one language, or even if you do, be prepared to see random people walk up to eachother and start jabbering away in a language you can't even identify. So know as much about every language you can, and maybe you will have a slight understanding of what people are saying. Last bit of advice is to know your mormon lingo. Know what a stake center is, what a fireside is, know what RM and MTC mean, and always make food and game night plans for Sunday's. Let us know what other words, phrases, and lingo BYU students need to survive and watch for our next instalment of What's the Word ! BYU seems to follow its own fashion rules. People seem to have a timeless style that does not exist outside of the Provo bubble. So what are the current trends that you need to be aware of? 1. Cardigans are always in...like always 2. Joggers and sweats are a must have 3. Basketball shorts never go out of style, even in the freezing cold weather! 4. Accesiorize, accesiorize, accesiorize (necklaces, scarfs, hats, etc...) 5. BYU girls can never go wrong in a skirt 6. Logo t-shirts help unite the lovers of that tv shoe or movie 7. Snow boots! 8. Layer Up-Not even the weather man can predict Provo weather! 9. Jean under your holed jeans! 10. Keep your colors popin! And when in doubt, remmeber this is BYU wh Stick to these trends, and you will be fitting in in no time! And when in doubt, remember this is BYU, where modest is hottest! Keep your eyes out for our next instalment of Style Watch. |
